Eco Friendly Concrete Block Manufacturing: Bangladesh Perspective
As you are well aware, brick is a
basic construction material. But very unfortunately, still we are manufacturing
clay bricks by burning our topsoil, which is a very limited and valuable resources
for food security. For its production, we are burning tons of woods, cutting trees
– the best friend of our environment. The process emits CO2 that is
responsible for global warming. It is not technology based rather weather
dependent. The production method is not only environmentally harmful but also
outdated and weather-dependent. We must urgently transition away from this
practice. We appreciate the government’s strategic plan to stop clay brick
production by 2027.
As an alternative, there is a
proven technology: the concrete block technology – that uses cement, sand and
stone dust as raw materials, all of which are easily available in our country.
This technology has been approved by HBRI. And number of plants already set up.
For your information, there are
more than 10,000 brickfields running in our country, all of which should be
substituted by concrete block technology. At present the market demand is 30-35
billion bricks per annum. So, it’s a huge market.
To capture this market, you can set
up an eco-friendly concrete block plant which will use river bed sand, use
solar energy, save top soil, no burning, no emission- sustainable and compliant
factory. It may be small scale to large scale factory having capacity of
producing different types of blocks required for building, road, river
protection block etc.

Autoclave Aerated Concrete (AAC)
What is AAC? AAC stands for Autoclaved Aerated Concrete. It is also known as Aerated Cellular Concrete or Aircrete. This precast foam concrete in the form of blocks or panels are used as wall, floor, or roofs. It is made with fine aggregates, cement, and an expansion agent that causes the fresh mixture to rise like bread dough. In the factory where it is made, the raw materials are blended, molded and cut into precisely dimensioned units. It is cured in the autoclaved and then ready for uses as building construction materials instead of bricks. Cured blocks or panels of autoclaved aerated concrete are joined with thin bed mortar as done in brick masonry work. This type of concrete contains 80 percent air. This lightweight material offers excellent sound and thermal insulation, and like all cement-based materials, is strong and fire-resistant.
